Extra Kneeling during Lent

As we are almost in Lent, now is good time to remind everyone that additional kneeling is prescribed in both the Mass and Office on the Ferial Days of Lent starting, of course, with Ash Wednesday tomorrow. All of the information below is also noted on the Ordo page and on the other pages with details for each Office.

At both Mass and at all Offices, all kneel for the Collect prayer (at Mass, also at the Postcommunion prayer and the Prayer over the People at the end of Mass) and any Commemorations which follow. In all cases, all stand until the word “Oremus” is sung/said, after which all kneel for the prayer through to the response “Amen”.

Kneeling also occurs in the Office whenever the Ferial Preces are added to Lauds and Vespers on the Wednesdays and Fridays of Lent (if the Office is of the Season), and also at Lauds on Ember Saturday.

The above additional kneeling is never observed on Sundays (i.e. from I Vespers on Saturday to Compline on Sunday night) and on I & II Class Feasts celebrated during Lent. Stand as usual for the Collect(s) on these days.
